Woodward: Photographer puts WOW in the wedding business
Karen Quincy Loberg / Star staff Kimberlee Miller, a wedding photographer from Moorpark, has created a network of female wedding professionals called Women of Weddings. Here she poses for a portrait at home.
Kimberlee Miller, 36, of Moorpark, has been a professional photographer specializing in photo coverage of weddings for the past seven years. Even though she has an increasingly busy schedule, she recently launched an additional project.
During the past few years, Miller has averaged between 40 and 50 weddings per year. However, during the summer season she typically photographs two or three weddings each week, she said.
She recently started a regional business league or network of women photographers specializing in weddings called "Women of Weddings" (WOW).
They now have 11 members with others applying for membership. At this point, most are from points within Ventura County. Miller is president and founder of the group.
"We not only focus on networking with each other, we support female causes and offer support to professional ladies who not only run busy businesses but also run busy family lives," Miller said. "We are finding the potential for this group is unlimited."
The group's Web site is: http://www.womenofweddings.com.
When Miller started her business Kimberlee Miller Photography she had one very young daughter. She now has three daughters, all under age 8.
"One reason I became an independent photographer is that it gave me more control of my working schedule, allowing more time with my daughters. Most of my work is on weekends, so I have more time during the week for my kids," Miller said. "Also, I have long loved photography, ever since I borrowed my father's Canon camera at the age of 12. I took many photos with that camera. In fact, I don't think I ever returned it."
Miller works from a studio in her Moorpark home. One large room is devoted to her photography business.
In addition to weddings, Miller photographs scenes for rock 'n' roll musicians and groups. Over the past year, she has handled many photo assignments for the band INXS and others. Her photos are used on album covers and Web sites. She won a Silver ADDY award for her work as principal photographer for songwriter and performing artist Marty Casey's Web site.
Before establishing her photography business, Miller worked as a paralegal for a tax attorney for nine years, and for a talent agency for two years.
"In the future, I'd like to hold my wedding photography assignments to one per month," Miller noted. "I'd also like to eventually buy a property where I can live and hold weddings. My other key passion is music, so I'd like to travel around the world to shoot musical artists' album covers and concerts."
